April 8 - Sangha Gathering

What Does “Threat” Feel Like To You?

Where In Your Body Do You Feel It?

What Are Your Personal Strategies To Equanimity?

We’ve been inquiring into understanding human motivation and behavior and gaining insight into awareness of how our mental states affect the quality of our lives and our growth as human beings and elders.

The Kleshas have provided a structure and a tool for identifying what brings suffering into our lives.

The five fundamental Kleshas are:

  • Avidya Ignorance

  • Asmita Egoism

  • Raga Attachment

  • Dvesha Aversion

  • Abhinivesha Fear of Death

Our continued goal now is using the Kleshas in daily life, starting with basic knowledge of where in your body/mind do you experience suffering. What do you identify as a threat and why; and once you become aware of the problems (yes – more than one Klesha can be active at the same time) the process of finding solutions has started.

To effectively work with the Kleshas we can consider the following approaches:

• Cultivating mindfulness: Regularly practice mindfulness to observe how the Kleshas manifest in your thoughts and emotions.

• Cultivating reflection: Take time to reflect on reactions and feelings, identifying which Klesha may be influencing your behavior.

• Consciously choosing responses

• Identifying triggers

• Practicing Acceptance: engage both pleasant and unpleasant experiences to develop resilience and equanimity.

The Sangha is a community examining how to live our best expression of wisdom and Elderhood. To be this expression, we must shift our way of thinking so that we transmute information and insights into wisdom. In this Sangha we offer experiences and discussions that inform the process of becoming Elder. We draw from the rich traditions of Eastern and Western practices, philosophies and psychologies.
